A wine rack is the simplest way to store bottles properly and keep them where you can see them. It covers everything from a small worktop holder to a floor-standing rack that carries a few dozen bottles. This guide covers the types, what to measure, what the materials mean and how to pick the right wine bottle storage for your room.

Why bottles need a rack

Wine keeps best lying flat, cool and out of the light. A box in the garage fails on all three, and a cupboard shelf keeps bottles upright. A rack holds each bottle on its side, keeps air moving around it and puts the label where you can read it. It also stops bottles rolling, which matters once there are more than a handful.

Then there is the room itself. A rack full of bottles is part of the furniture. A good one suits the kitchen, dining room or bar it sits in, modern or classic.

The four types of wine rack

Countertop racks. Small racks for a worktop, sideboard or bar cart, usually 4 to 12 bottles. Most need no assembly. Pick these for the bottles you will open this month.

Wall mounted racks. Metal or timber racks that fix to a wall and hold 6 to 24 bottles. They take no floor space and turn the bottles into a display. Fix into studs or masonry.

Freestanding floor racks. Tiered racks that stand on the floor and hold 12 to 72 bottles. The right choice for a growing collection, a pantry or a cellar. Many stack to grow with you.

Wine glass racks. Under-cabinet rails that hang stemware by the base, keeping glasses dust free and the worktop clear. Measured by the number of rows and the rail length.

Measure before you buy

Measure the worktop, wall or floor space, then compare it with the assembled dimensions on the product page. For a wall rack, check what is behind the plasterboard. For a floor rack, allow a hand's width on each side to pull bottles out. For a glass rack, measure the depth of the cabinet and the height of your tallest glass.

Count the bottles you actually keep, then add a third. Collections grow, and a rack with spare slots looks better than one with bottles stacked on top.

What the materials mean

Steel and iron. Powder-coated or plated metal in black, gold or chrome. Strong for its size, suits a modern room, and the usual choice for wall racks.

Timber. Pine, acacia and other hardwoods. Warm, classic and heavy enough to stay put on a worktop. Keep timber racks out of damp spots.

Bamboo. Light, strong and quick growing. The common choice for stackable floor racks because the tiers are easy to carry and fit together.

Weight and fixing

A full 750 ml bottle weighs about 1.3 kg. That makes a 12-bottle rack around 16 kg loaded and a 72-bottle rack close to 95 kg. Floor racks need a level, solid floor. Assembly

Countertop racks are usually ready out of the box. Wall racks fix with the supplied screws, and a drill, a level and a pencil are all you need. Floor racks ship flat-packed with fittings; a 6-tier rack takes about half an hour for one person.

Where to put it

Cool, steady and dark is the rule. Keep racks away from the oven, dishwasher, heater and sunny windows. A dining room, hallway or pantry is usually better than the kitchen worktop for bottles you plan to keep for more than a few months.
